Science Curriculum Statement

INTENT

At Glenmead Primary School we believe that providing an engaging science curriculum will help to develop children’s curiosity, interest, knowledge and understanding of their immediate environment as well as the world beyond school.

We endeavour to help our pupils to develop their knowledge of scientific ideas by using different types of scientific enquiry in order to answer their own questions.

Our aim is, that through stimulating and challenging experiences, children will secure and extend their scientific knowledge, skills and vocabulary.

We believe that these opportunities will ensure that our pupils are confident, life-long learners who will have developed the skills and knowledge to explore and conserve the world around them.

IMPLEMENTATION

This all begins in the Early Years Foundation Stage where science is introduced indirectly through the Early Learning Goals and activities that encourage children to:

  •  explore
  •  problem solve
  •  observe
  •  predict
  •  think
  •  make decisions
  •  talk about the world around them

As the pupils travel through our school they encounter some topics that they will return to each year; building upon previous knowledge and understanding. Alongside these cyclical units are some discrete units that stand alone as a single unit of work.

As pupils progress through the school, they will explore creatures, people, plants and objects in their natural environments. They will observe and manipulate objects and materials in order to identify similarities and differences. Our pupils also learn to use their senses, ask questions about why things happen and how things work. As an important part of our pupils’ long-term health and well-being, they also learn to recognise the effects that exercise has on the body;  the importance of eating a healthy diet and making healthy lifestyle choices.
