Art and Design Curriculum Statement
INTENT
It is our intent for the Art element of our school curriculum to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
The purpose of Art and Design education is to give pupils the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express their responses to ideas and experiences in a visual or tactile form.
We believe Art education stimulates creativity and the child’s imagination whilst giving the child unique opportunities to develop intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially. Pupils acquire the ability to make informed, critical responses of their own work and that of others, including artists from the past, those that are living, male, female, work locally in Birmingham, and those that are from other parts of the UK and from around the world.
IMPLEMENTATION
Art is taught as an individual subject as well as incorporated into other curriculum lessons, linking relevantly to Geography, RE, History and Literacy.
Art fires the children’s imagination and enjoyment is derived from Art and Design and through deeper understanding; pupils can gain access to the cultural richness and diversity of our classes, school, community and city of Birmingham. The appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches all our lives here at Glenmead.
